Before I get into much more detail about Andra Day, I first must mention her opening act – the sensational sisters Chloe x Halle. These two angels set the tone of the evening with a short and sweet set. Their vocals – individually – blew me away – and together – I was left speechless. With a fun and upbeat set, these sisters made sure to let us know who they are and what they are about. You could definitely hear inflections of their mentor, and label head – Beyonce – in their musical performance which was breathtaking. These talented sisters can sing! I am a fan and I look forward to seeing them at their own show sometime in the future.
With impeccable vocals and a humble soul, this beautiful woman delivered an outstanding show. From the onset, she candidly told us [the audience] that her show was a “conversation”. It was obvious that the audience (myself included) loved it because when she asked questions, and when she got real about her the inspiration behind her songs, there was some hollering to which she would laugh and respond to. Her candidness just made her more appealing (if you didn’t like her already) because she was just being herself. In addition, the venue was so intimate and it offered that … something extra, that you don’t necessarily get at an arena show, which again, added to the sensuality of the show.
Musically, she is phenomenal. Her vocal range is just on another level of soulful R’n’B. She has a powerful voice that reaches yo – right there in your gut – it just takes your breath away. It’s so honest and raw and has so much depth. I can’t stop gushing! She played tracks from her debut studio album Cheers to the Fall, for over an hour and despite the fact that it was her show, she took the chorus line at one point and let Charlie who was on keys do his thing and deliver unto us some of his soul – brother Charlie took us to church!
There is no denying that Andra Day is a star on the rise. Her genuine need to connect with her audience makes you fall in love with her. Her voice is a soulful dose of honesty, depth and it makes you feel all types of emotions. There is no gimmick when it comes to her and it was a pleasure to be in her presence. I would definitely recommend that if she is in your town, go see her. You will not be disappointed.
