During the festive season, one might say that I overdose on all Christmas movies – past and present. In my lousy defense, I CAN’T HELP IT! I love this season for all the Hallmark movies, repetitive storylines and all the bad acting that goes along with all the other made for TV movies – and despite it all, I can’t stop watching. That said, I wanted to share my unconventional top 5 list Christmas movies that I like to watch this time of year. The plots, the acting and of course, the season all play a part in why I watch these movies year over year. Peep my list below.
Die Hard (1988)
You were expecting something else? Die Hard knows what you want for Christmas – Bruce Willis as John McLane serving kick-ass to a bunch of terrorists holding up a Christmas party celebration at the Nakatomi Plaza. I love this movie because of John McLane character. He is a badass all the way. And who doesn’t love looking at actors when they had hair … on their heads of course! LOL.
The Sound of Music (1965)
This heartwarming story – based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II, is a movie that is a must every Christmas holiday. Julie Andrews plays the role of Maria, the tomboyish nun at an Austrian abbey who becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children. With her newfound role, she brings music, warmth, and love into a broken family and household. What’s not to love about this movie? The catchy music, young love, family and the burgeoning romance between 2 unknowing adults. It’s a classical masterpiece that has so many teaching moments for anyone – in whatever stage of life, they are in.
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
I love Sandra Bullock. There – I said it. This movie is one of my favorites. Lucy – a hopeless romantic Chicago Transit Authority token collector is mistaken for the fiancée of a coma patient whom she saves after he mugged and thrown onto the train tracks. It just so happens that the patient she saved is the man she has been lusting over. I can’t tell the rest but if you haven’t watched it, it is worth every minute!
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
This movie gives me all the feels. There is no wrong or right time to watch this movie because it is just a beautiful cinematic creation. Johnny Depp is wonderful as the sensitive Edward… who is a bit misunderstood because he is different. My favorite scene is when Edward makes it snow for the first time in their town. Beautiful. You will love it too!
Anastasia (1991)
Anastasia re-imagines the life of the youngest of the Russian Royal Family’s youngest daughter – Anastasia Romanov. The movie depicts her survival of the revolution and her trials as she tries to track down her grandmother – her last living family member. The movie takes place during winter in Russia, and all the scenes you see are just magnificently festive. For an animated musical with a superb soundtrack, this is a beautiful film.
This is my list of unconventional Christmas movies. It doesn’t even phase me that some were before I was even born or when I was a toddler. I love all of them for various reasons, but the main themes between them all are love and family. That being said, I would love to add more movies to my unconventional movie list, so please share. What do you like to watch during this time of year that is not your typical “festive” movie? Looking for recommendations so please drop them below.
