We do a lot of talking, but do we do the walking? We are great at giving advice for the elements in life we have encountered, but we are not that great at taking the advice we dish sometimes because we think it doesn’t apply to us. I know I am for damn sure not the best at taking advice because I think I need to learn it the hard way, but sometimes, the hard way is just the most painful way, yet, one of the most avoidable ways too.
I was thinking about this earlier today, and I was drawn to write and share my thoughts on the topic because I had such an interesting encounter at the passport office a few months ago. As I was in the process of completing the application for a rush order passport because I realized I couldn’t travel on an almost expired passport. And when I got to the “occupation” blank, it dawned on me that I hadn’t fully claimed my occupation as a creative – a Content Creator. I create content to share with you on subject matters that are close to my heart and mind. When I started my blog, it was because I needed a “creative outlet” which is what everyone says when asked the question of why they started a blog, youtube channel or business. But it was different for me because as much as I owned all my business education then, and love my degree that hangs on the wall, that was and is my “Plan B”. All through university, I didn’t really know much about the whole digital space – aside from watching music videos on Youtube and figuring out how to bootleg TV shows and movies, but back then, I knew I had never wanted to be in the corporate world of black suits and the never-ending supply of white blouses so I sought out co-ops in creative industries because that’s where I saw myself thriving and living my truth. And if it wasn’t certain that the corporate world was not for me back then, I definitely knew it for certain in my 3rd year of university after I declared an Accounting major that it wasn’t for me, because I did not enjoy waking up for classes at all. So I switched out into a Marketing major at the first chance I got because that is where my heart truly was I don’t regret that decision ever. The power I had at that moment as I completed my passport application to attend the Create & Cultivate conference in Seattle was just one key moment in my life that I could have said anything under the moon, but chose to own my shit and tell the representative that I was and am a Content Creator. We all have moments in our lives where we are given the chance to walk the talk, and if we don’t choose ourselves and what we believe in, we are denying ourselves because we are not owning who we are and what we are about. We talk a lot about the things that we wish we had done, could do or would do if the situation was different. But what we fail to realize sometimes is that it is in our power to make the changes we want in our life so that we can walk the talk and live the life we preach to others to go seek out. The amount of power I wield to change things is the same as yours, and you and I have every right to walk the talk and be who we are because we deserve to walk in our truth.
Now, I ask you this question because maybe you need to answer it for yourself, before you speak to anyone else. Do you walk the talk? Do you live what you put out into the world? If you don’t, something needs to change and it’s up to you to make that change happen.
